Psico-oncología: abordaje psicosocial del paciente con cáncer

Resumen
La psico-oncología es una sub-especialidad dedicada al cuidado psicosocial del paciente con cáncer y de su familia, cuyos focos de interés van desde la respuesta inicial al diagnóstico de cáncer hasta el cuidado del paciente moribundo. Se enfatizan tres áreas básicas de cuidado clínico: la comunicación de malas noticias, la detección de distres psicosocial y el abordaje diagnóstico y terapéutico (farmacológico y psicoterapéutico) de los trastornos mentales que aparecen como complicación del cáncer. Aspectos relativos a enseñanza e investigación son comentados y finalmente se hacen algunas consideraciones en relación a direcciones futuras en esta área.
